How to GLOW UP over the summer PART 2: MIND

Teresa Barker How to GLOW Up over the summer PART 2: MIND

Part 1 of “How to Glow Up over the summer” was my previous blog post that focused on looks.

But now I want to switch gears and focus on our minds and how to leave the summer in a better place mentally than when summer began.

How to glow up mentally

Just like our appearance, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to improvements. With looks, it was about assessing what makes you feel insecure and either learning to love it, or doing something extra to improve how it looks. The same idea goes for your mind. Think about the mental things that are holding you back from being your best self. I’m sure you already know what they are.

Step 1: Determine what’s mentally hurting you

My current mental setbacks are my tendency to get down on myself or anxious about things from overthinking it. Especially the pressures of school and my future were really getting to me, and even making me feel depressed at times. It was making me feel stuck, and so unlike myself. I was in a huge mental rut this past semester.

Step 2: Make a list of possible solutions

There is a solution to every problem, I promise you. When making this list, don’t limit yourself. Even if as you’re thinking of it, if it seems so unrealistic, write it down. During the brainstorm session to any project, one should never limit their mind in ideas.

For me, my list looked something like:

  • switch majors to something I like better
  • transfer schools
  • take time off of school
  • try meditation
  • drop out of college and become an entrepreneur
  • exercise 2 times a day to fight anxiety
  • move to Cali and start over
  • drop a class
  • go to therapy

My actual list was much longer, but you get the idea. Some are realistic, some are wholesome, and some are just not going to happen haha. But being able to look at my long list of possible solutions made me feel like change was coming and I wasn’t so stuck in this negative mental state.

Step 3: Pick a solution(s)

Here’s where you weed out the bad ideas to reveal the good solutions. For me, this resulted in me deciding to change my major and transfer colleges. And honestly, I haven’t felt this good mentally in MONTHS.

Once you figure out the best solution, figure out how you’re going to follow through with it. Some examples:

  • If you’ve been depressed and want to go on antidepressants, research the best ones and their side effects. Once you’ve done your own research, make a doctors appointment and discuss with them the best one for you. Then, get the prescription, and start taking it.
  • If you’ve been anxious and decided to use meditation and yoga to remedy it, download a meditation app and find yoga videos on YouTube to follow along to. Schedule into your planner when you’re going to meditate and when you’re going to practice yoga.
  • If you have these dreams but just keep telling yourself you can’t do it, and you’ve decided to start anyway, plan out the first few steps you need to take. Even if they’re very simple and small, it builds momentum. Let’s say you’ve wanted to start a blog but something mentally is holding you back – start by making a list of 20 blog post ideas, pick a picture of yourself to use, and brainstorm blog names.

General Ways to Grow Our Minds

Other than addressing your specific mental health issue, there are things that you, me, and everyone can do to grow mentally. These things simply involve engaging our mind, thinking critically, and creating a good head space for yourself.

Ways to do this include:

  • Reading regularly
    • strengthens your vocabulary
    • allows you quiet time to yourself
    • introduces new ways of thinking you’ve never thought about before
    • if you need ideas on what to read this summer, I wrote a blog post on Books to Read this Summer to Become a Better You
  • Exercise
    • our minds and bodies are very interconnected. The way you take care of your body reflects in the way you think about yourself and your general outlook on life
    • releases endorphins = instant happiness
    • it’s hard to think badly about yourself if you’re taking good care of yourself
  • Grab Coffee with Someone Interesting
    • this could be a friend you haven’t caught up with in a long time
    • perhaps someone interested in the same things you are, and you two could start a new hobby together or grow in your current hobby or interest
    • this could be a relative, I’m sure there’s old family stories that you haven’t heard before that might blow your mind
    • This could be someone you just met, and you could gain a whole new perspective from them.

These are just some of the classic ways to grow our minds as well as hopefully some ways you haven’t thought of before. These are all things I’m going to be incorporating into my summer days to grow mentally.

Remember, summer glow starts from the inside out.

As always, let me know how you plan to grow and glow your mind this summer in the comments below!

❤, Teresa
